Theory on Personality

Nature vs. Nurture

Every individual has a specific and unique personality based on their emotional, mental, developmental and behavioral attributes. One’s personality consists of the qualities and traits that a specific person exhibits and results in character development. Personality is based on genetics, inheritance, location, neighborhood and other status and environmental changes. Personality can be acquired and inherited, dynamic or static, and occur at different levels. Mental changes occur too as a person grows, matures and experiences more life. Personality is easily influenced by technological, medical and environmental changes. Many psychologists agree that personality is a bit of both, nature and nurture, but some favor one over the other.  The creation of personality is questioned by many psychologists and scientists whether there is more influence from one, nature, or the other, nurture.

Nurture

Our personality is created and developed by society, government, family, peers, neighborhood, economical status, environment and other significant influences. Our individuality but yet similarity is our necessities for survival is also an influential creator of personality. Many believe that our surroundings influence our personality and create who we are and what we do.

One psychologist, Abraham Maslow, researched on personality theories and drew a triangle of basic needs to survive, and then, necessities to have a healthy mind and body. In other words, people go through different and various levels to develop their personality and they adapt to it differently. His “triangle” consists of physiological, safety, belonging, esteem needs and last of all, self- actualization. The “physiological need” is the indispensability of water, oxygen, calcium, protein, vitamins and other vital needs for our body and mind to function. Also, we have a necessity to balance our pH, to regulate our body temperature, be active, rest, sleep, to avoid pain and sex. The “safety need” is our demand for protection, stability, order, limits, safe circumstances and structure. The “belonging need” is the essential of friends, a lover, a family, children, relationships and/ or even a society. The “esteem need” is divided in two categories, low and high esteem. The Low esteem consists of fame, glory, respect for others, status, appreciation, dignity and other feelings. High esteem consists of confidence, competence, independence, freedom and other liberties and self-improvement. Last of all, self- actualization was the development of personality or when one found himself/ herself.

People will do what it takes to make their life enjoyable and pleasant. Personality is influenced by their surroundings and society. For example, a community in is different than a community in Texas because of the different cultures, ideologies, luxuries, governments… Personalities differ from one person to another because individuals have been exposed to different experiences and opinions. If people were the same, our world would never evolve and become better. It would be consistent, stability and equilibrium. Individuality is unique and interesting.

Nature

Some psychologists believe that genetics and inheritance are transferred from generation to generation. As Charles Darwin quotes, “Woman seems to differ from man in mental disposition, chiefly in her greater tenderness and less selfishness… Owing to her maternal instincts [she] displays these qualities toward her infants in an eminent degree; therefore it is likely that she would often extend them towards her fellow- creatures.” Is it in her genes? Gene is a sequence of DNA that is located on a specific part of a chromosome and it determines a particular characteristic.

One psychologist, Paul R. Ehrlich, says that genes undergo mutation when the male chromosomes connect with the female chromosomes giving the newly created life specific characteristics of the mother and the father. For example, the child might have the shape of the mother but have the father’s personality or vice versa. There are two types of chromosomes: dominant and recessive chromosome which means that there is always a possibility of a small similarity but different characteristics. For example, my mother, my father and my brother have brown eyes meanwhile I have blue-green eyes. This means the recessive gene took over at the specific location for the “eye color” on the chromosome. Do “bad genes” exist? In other words, would “killer genes” from a member of the family, be passed on to the child? Or “alcoholic gene”? Or the “drug gene”? Many parents will tell their children to be careful when they start drinking because there might be a past of alcoholics in the family. Could this mean that this child has a higher risk of becoming an alcoholic? It is possible since genes pass on most of the information from the parents to the future child. It still has not been proven but many criminologists and scientists believe that there might be some influence from past genes to the future genes. Paul R. Ehrlich says, “Genes are sometimes described as “selfish”, self- replicating elements that, although reshuffling every generation and occasionally mutating, have the “goal” of maximizing the production of more copies of themselves.”

I believe that there is an influence from both elements, nurture and nature. There are many influences externally and internally in a person. One can choose who one wants to be surrounded by but cannot choose one’s genetics. Friends, teachers, environment, society, family, location, city, or any thing else can influence and create a person’s personality. Every individual is different because everyone is influenced differently by one’s surroundings. An individual is also influenced by genetics and inheritance. For example, if there a common disease in a family that has been passed on from generation to generation, it is a great possibility that it will be passed on to the next generation. Genes does have some kind of influence on personality even if it does not show until later in one’s life. We are being influenced every day and we change and grow every day that goes by even if we do not realize it. We can choose a personality and who we want to be. 2sem_rhet_pap#3

In Gattaca, Vincent, an "in-valid", takes the identity and genetics of a guy called Jerome. He becomes another person, a "perfect" person. His parents played with their genes to make a "perfect" boy instead of an "in-valid". His brother, Anton, was stronger and more perfect than him. Jerome has the perfect genetics and health for the job that Vincent wants. The only thing that is wrong with Jerome is that he is crippled so Vincent takes his identity. He lives a dual life; one at work and one outside of work. Vincent is accused of a murder and must cover up his true identity from the police. He plays tricks on the police.

In Being John Malkovich, Craig finds a portal into John Malkovich's life. He becomes John Malkovick's soul. Craig and Maxine take advantage of this portal. They charge people $200 so that they can be someone else for fifteen minutes. Craig takes over the body. He launches his career as a puppeteer and marries Maxine. He is a "vessel" for a group of people so that they can live forever. This movie shows that a person has a soul with different personalities. The subconscious stores memories of a person growing up which each person takes over. The soul lives on forever while a body leaves. This movie was very interesting and I loved the idea!

C.2   I believe that I deserve an A because I have attended and participated in class. I have worked my hardest on all my assignments and I am planning to do the extra credit before Tuesday such as watching Gattaca and Being John Malkovich. I have participated in all the conversations and have talked and woked with my peers. I feel like I have taken something out of this class. My writing and thinking skills have improved and I am switching my major to interdisciplinary studies -- psychology, sociology and languages. I really enjoyed this class even though Motime is probably the most confusing site I have ever been on. I did not realize all the comments you had posted for my papers because it never told me and did not figure out how to check it out until today! Haha!

B.2    This course has definitely helped me in my critical thinking, my writing and working with others. My writing for the papers has improved a lot during this semester and is more creative. My thoughts are faster and more detailed. I listened to all the lectures to get help with my papers and thoughts so that I could improve my work. I worked with others to see what they thought and took in ideas and changes to ameliorate my papers. My knowledge also grew during this semester especially on comparative religion. It was an eye- opener. My research and technology skills are much better than last semester. I know where to search for ideas and more information on my topics. I have to say that this class has definitely improved my writing skill.
